Review: The Masters Chair by Kartell, Three chairs in one?
Happy Thanksgiving!
It is pretty amazing that 2015 is coming to an end but there is still plenty of time to make 2015 the best year. For me personally has been a very exciting, stressful, and trying year. Earlier this week though I stumbled upon this beautiful chair at a furniture store that was closing its doors, it sparked something inside of me. The spark was my internal love for design, the chair was the Masters chair by Phillipe Starck and Eugeni Quitlett. My life had become so busy over the last 7 years that I forgot how much I liked this chair till I saw it again in person. Needless to say I bought it to remind me to keep following my passion.
Alright, so what makes this chair so special? If you are a design geek you will know, if not I'll explain the mash of curves and lines. The chair was designed by Starck and Quitlett in 2009 as a nod to three of the most iconic mid-century modern chairs by Eames, Jacobsen, and Saarinen. Each one of these chairs have a distinct profile that had made them so famous that I guarantee that most of the modern world has seen one of them. The goal with this chair was to combine the profiles of the iconic chairs and overlay them together. So, what at first glance appears to be a mash of incoherent lines becomes totally clear upon second glance. The photo-sequence below shows the Eames, Jacobsen, and Saarinen chairs.
While these chairs might not be your style they are well noted pieces in design history, all piece I really like. So, what this Masters chair represents to me essentially is all three chairs in one single piece. Frankly, that is what living simply is about. Keep only things you love or have great meaning to you that are appreciated on a daily basis. I will be using this chair daily at my desk, yet is also art, and keeps me reminded what I really enjoy, design.
Now, pardon me as I fall down the rabbit hole of Black Friday Shopping.
